A team of 92 cyclists from Unilever have raised over £81,000 by cycling 180 miles from Leatherhead to Gilwern last weekend.
The Miles4Mel fundraiser is the third annual cycling challenge which raises awareness and funds for Get A-Head, a charity trust dedicated to fighting head and neck diseases. The cycle is completed by colleagues and friends of Mel Jaggard, an employee at Unilever UK and Ireland who tragically passed away from Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma, a rare form of head and neck cancer, in 2013.
The team at Unilever departed from the Leatherhead offices on the morning of Friday 20th May, and all 92 cyclists safely arrived in Mel’s hometown of Gilwern on Saturday 21st May.
Simon Fisher, Customer Director at Unilever UK and Ireland, who participated in the cycle said: “Miles4Mel not only commemorates one of our great friends, Mel, who inspired so many of us, it also brings together colleagues to celebrate her life and raise funds for a great cause. The challenging cycle is also a great way of bringing the team closer together and is something which Mel would have definitely participated.”
One cyclist, managed to complete the gruelling 180 mile journey on the infamous Boris bike of London. Graham Walker, Logistics Network Manager at Unilever UK and Ireland kept up with the rest of the cyclists despite the bike’s clunky exterior.
All proceeds raised by the Unilever team will go to Get A-Head’s dedicated Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma (ACC) fund. Over the past three years the team at Unilever have raised over £200,000 and set themselves an ambitious target of raising £75,000 this year. Mel was also an active fundraiser for the charity and raised and donated thousands of pounds to the charity before she lost her battle with cancer.
Louise Newton, Charity Manager at Get A-Head said: “We are astounded and extremely proud of each and every one of the Unilever Miles4Mel team. Their fundraising efforts and dedication to raising money in memory of Mel is not only commendable, but also truly selfless. Get A-Head are extremely grateful to be able to support the team and have them choose us to fundraise for.
