Variety Ball 2016

Posted by Anne-Marie on December 8, 2016

Saturday 26th November was a very special evening in the Get A-Head calendar; it was the evening of our Variety Ball and helped us raise a phenomenal £45,000.

Over 500 guests arrived looking glamorous and handsome in their evening dress and were welcomed to the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, with a drinks reception supplied by Purity Brewing Co and Paul Roberts Wines Ltd

After welcome drinks, guests were shown through to the spectacular Monarch Suite, dressed in all its glory, with beautifully laid out tables, black and gold covered chairs, gorgeous centre pieces supplied by Covered in Love of Solihull and a back drop of theatrical opulence superbly organised by Lemon Zest Events.

We were welcomed in to the room by a set from James TW, a wonderfully entertaining singer from Warwick, who also played for us during dinner and for our wonderful dancers Shannon & Peter, who showcased their beautiful contemporary ballet.

The evening was jam-packed full of entertainment, and was expertly compered by the wonderful Ben Hanlin, who also captivated the crowd with his magic tricks.

Tom Bromwich, Chairman of Get A-Head, thanked all who had attended and all those that played a part in the evening during his speech and went on to say Get A-Head are going from strength to strength and will continue to strive to achieve our goal of helping patients and their families suffering with head and neck disease and head and neck cancers.

We then had a spine-chilling performance from WestEnd2U, a superb quartet of West End performers who sang songs from Les Miserables and received a well-deserved standing ovation.

Two short films were shown to the guests during the evening featuring two of our patients and their families who have benefited from the work we are involved in, you can see these videos on our website here.

This then led us into our main auction, fantastically undertaken by James Hawkesford of Hawkesford Auctioneers with Tickets to see Take That Live in Las Vegas up for grabs in the first lot, kindly donated by Alastair Lukies, followed by many other excellent and exceptional prizes, including Dining for 8 at Simpsons donated by Andreas Antona, a Bespoke Hand-Made Suit donated by Clements and Church, and a whole host of other fab prizes. We also had lots more fundraising going on during the evening in the forms of Heads and Tails, a Raffle, Silent Auction all with fantastic prizes and a Special Red Envelope Draw with a £1000 John Lewis Voucher up for grabs.

Russell Kane, the multi-award winning comedian was our headliner and entertained our guests with his own brand of humour, and giving his thoughts  on Brexit and life as a married family man and his take on how romantic success varies depending on your regional accent had the audience in stitches.

After the fundraising and auctions, the evening ended on a real high note with live music and a smashing performance from Detroit Soul Collective, the white LED dance floor certainly got put through its paces as the crowd were pulling out all the moves and enjoying the electric atmosphere!

Louise Newton, Charity Manager said of the night: “Wow, what an amazing night the Variety Ball was, from magic to musicals, live music with beautiful dancers, tears to laughter,  bidding to dancing and everything in between,

The production was wonderful, the entertainment was first class, the room looked beautiful  but it was the warm atmosphere and the kindness and generosity of everyone who attended that blew me away.  We have received some really lovely feedback on the event and I am very proud and thankful that everyone enjoyed the evening.

The new year will bring some exciting changes for us, enabling Get A-Head  to continue supporting patients who have to face the uncertain journey of head and neck disease and cancers of the head and neck.  Thank you for your continued support, in the words of Get A-Head’s founder & Trustee  John Watkinson (aka JCW) who always champions Get A-Head –  Onwards and Upwards!”

Thank you to all who came and enjoyed and we look forward to welcoming you to next year’s event!
