Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research Update

As many of you are aware Get A-Head has a dedicated fund for Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma Research and many of our supporters have been fantastically busy raising funds for research into this rare form of cancer.

It most often occurs in the areas of the head and neck, in particular the Salivary Glands but has also been reported in other areas.

In 2013 Get A-Head approved a grant to the Institute of Cancer Research for Professor Kevin Harrington to conduct a research project to use Tumour Profiling as a means of identifying novel therapeutic therapies for these high-risk salivary gland cancers, with a special emphasis on Adenoid Cystic Carcinome (ACC).

We are pleased to say we have now received our further report from Professor Harrington.

The trustees are very pleased with the outcomes of the initial research and at its latest meeting, they also approved a further Grant to Professor Harrington and the team at the Institute of Cancer Research to continue the research to investigate the role that TGF plays in the progression of ACC.

This will involve the use of cell lines and avatars already developed from the previous Get A-Head funded research, as well as the generation of new models to better understand the biology of the disease and to test potential new treatments.
