While many people would choose a spa day or a party, Frankie Bromwich will be spending her 24th birthday pounding the streets of London to raise money for the Get A-Ahead Charitable Trust, a cause very close to her heart.
Get A-Head raises money to support people with head and neck conditions, particularly cancer, and Frankie, from Warwickshire, is no stranger to the charity.
Her uncle, Tom Bromwich, is the chairman of the trust, her dad, Ed Bromwich is a thyroid cancer survivor, and Frankie herself has had life-changing preventative treatment to try to avoid thyroid cancer.
She will now be running the Vitality London 10k on September 28 – her 24th birthday – to raise vital funds to help the charity continue its work.
She said: “This race will hold a very special place in my heart as it also lands on my birthday, so I will be asking for donations as part of my birthday present! This will make my day even more special and meaningful.
“This challenge will mean a lot to me personally, as my dad, Ed Bromwich, suffered from thyroid cancer, and the Get A-head charity has a very special place in my heart with a lot of family involvement such as Tom, my uncle, being chairman.
“I have attended the Get A-head ball numerous times and I am always amazed at the support and contributions. Now I’d like to participate in my own personal challenge.”
As a result of her father’s thyroid cancer experience, Frankie – along with several other family members – had her thyroid removed as a preventative measure. The move is effective, but doesn’t come without its challenges.
Frankie said: “I believe I had it removed when I was five. Having my thyroid removed at a young age has had a lasting impact on me, requiring regular blood tests and check-ups every six months to monitor my condition. I also take Levothyroxine daily.
“Over the years, I’ve had to learn to manage the side effects, but the support of my doctors and the Get A-head charity has made the process much easier. It’s reassuring to know that others face similar thyroid-related challenges.
“Thanks to the medication and the ongoing support, I’m able to lead a healthy and active life, which is why I’m eager to participate in this 10k run and I am excited to raise money for a charity which means a lot to me and my family.
“It will be a great atmosphere, and I am hoping to get a few family members and friends down to London to support.”
Frankie, originally from Claverdon in Warwickshire, now lives in London and works as a business development manager at AWH Valuations, following the property path taken by many in her family – Ed is managing director of ehB Residential and Tom is founding partner of Bromwich Hardy commercial property agency.
Tom said: “Frankie and her brother as well as my own three children went through a really tough time when they were younger. They endured lots of painful, regular tests and also major surgery at a young age.
“They all know what an important role Get A-Head has played in our lives and myself along with all the trustees are really honoured that Frankie will be stepping out to undertake this huge challenge on her birthday to help us raise funds.
“Get A-Head is committed to supporting cutting-edge research, pioneering technology and education which improves the lives of people with head and neck diseases particularly cancer.
“We’ll all be rooting for Frankie and wish her the very best of luck.”
