September marks Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month, and to raise awareness Get A-Head is sharing the story of our chairman Tom Bromwich and his family’s personal journey.
In this powerful video testimony Tom recounts how an unexpected discovery following his twin brother Edward’s car accident led to a diagnosis that would impact their entire family.
In the video Tom explains how Get A-Head’s funding has made a crucial difference – not just to his family but to others across the world at risk of developing Thyroid Cancer
He said: “One amazing thing that Get A-Head has done in respect of our family and the very rare condition that we had is fund an important piece of research. The gene has now been found and if our children or grandchildren or anybody else in the world with the same condition needs to have a test, it can now be a simple blood test.”
This research breakthrough exemplifies Get A-Head’s mission to improve the lives of those affected by head and neck diseases through funding vital research, specialist equipment, education and support services.
Get A-Head, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2024, has raised well over £10 million since it was founded in 1994 by John Watkinson, Adrian Drake-Lee, the late Roy Castle, TV celebrity doctor Hilary Jones and the Warwickshire Cricketers.
The charity focuses on three key areas: funding equipment not available through the NHS, supporting research and providing education for healthcare professionals.
Sharing Tom’s story this Thyroid Cancer Awareness Month helps to remind us all of the importance of research, early detection and ongoing support for those affected by this condition.
